As one of the oldest black neighborhoods in New Orleans, the importance of its history can be felt as soon as you cross North Rampart St. A refuge for the city’s first free people of color, Treme has kept its history through many different avenues. Want history? Visit a museum specializing in New Orleans black and indigenous history like The Backstreet Cultural Museum and New Orleans African American Museum. Want authentic food? It is rich in history, and any tour worth it’s merit will definitely make it a priority. A quiet reprieve from the chaos of the Quarter, walk along the beautiful trees and water ways as you take in the statues and artwork featuring prominent black figures and artists. Extra special on Sundays-visit Congo Square in the afternoon to enjoy a traditional African American drum circle that dates back to the 1800’s when enslaved and free people of color gathered for music, market, and spiritual practices.
